DETAILS
Explore four iconic national monuments on this full-day private tour through Northern Arizona’s rich history and stunning landscapes: Tuzigoot, Montezuma Castle, Sunset Crater, and Wupatki. This exclusive adventure offers a deep dive into the ancient civilizations, geological wonders, and breathtaking scenery of the Southwest, all while traveling in the comfort of a luxury vehicle with an expert guide.
Your journey into the past begins at Tuzigoot National Monument, an ancient Sinagua pueblo perched on a ridge above the Verde Valley. This well-preserved 1,000-year-old village once housed a thriving community and offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. As you explore the site, your guide will provide insights into the daily lives of the Sinagua people, their trade networks, and their impressive masonry techniques.
Next, travel to Montezuma Castle National Monument, one of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in North America. Nestled high in a sheer limestone cliff, this five-story structure from the 12th century showcases the architectural ingenuity of the Sinagua civilization. The visitor center with its variety of fascinating maps and amazing artifacts invites you to learn more about how the Sinagua people thrived in this desert environment.
Next, we will journey north past an ancient 12600-foot-volcano and across the modern Navajo Nation to the Historic Cameron Trading Post for lunch. This is also an opportunity to shop for some tribal artwork and engage with Navajo artists about the significance of their work and the symbolism contained in it.
After lunch we continue to Wupatki National Monument, a collection of stunning red rock dwellings built by the Ancestral Puebloans over 900 years ago. This ruin was once amongst the biggest settlements of the region. It served as a flourishing trade and cultural center in the high desert and is a fascinating example of Sinaguan architecture, complete with a ball court and a ceremonial kiva.
Finally, step into a landscape transformed by a volcanic eruption that occurred nearly 1,000 years ago at Sunset Crater National Monument. This powerful event forever changed the terrain, creating a dramatic landscape of lava flows, cinder cones, and rugged volcanic rock. Trace the steps of the Apollo astronauts with a brief stroll through an out-of-this-world lava field,
before we return home at the end of a trip through ancient high desert times.
