Private Day Hiking Options

Your guide helps you choose between the canyon's two classic South Rim guided day hikes for your private tour — and customizes how far you go.

South Kaibab Trail

An exposed ridgeline with sweeping, panoramic views from the very first switchback, but it rewards stronger hikers with the most dramatic vistas — Ooh Aah Point and Cedar Ridge are favorite turnarounds.

Bright Angel Trail

A gentler, partly shaded grade that follows a natural fault line, with a rest stop and seasonal water at Mile-And-A-Half rest house, a comfortable choice for first-time canyon hikers or families.

Popular day-hike turnarounds include Ooh Aah Point, Cedar Ridge and the 1.5 Mile Resthouse on the Bright Angel Trail. Your exact trail and turnaround point depend on weather, trail conditions, seasonal closures, the time of year, your group's ability and your guide's judgment on the day — we never lock you into a fixed route.

Your Day

What to Expect on Your Grand Canyon Hike

After door-to-door pick-up in a private, air-conditioned SUV or van, you'll drive to the South Rim while your guide shares the geology, history and wildlife along the way. At the trailhead you gear up with the provided poles and day packs, then descend below the rim at a relaxed, unhurried pace — stopping for photos, rests and water as often as you like. A sit-down lunch at historic El Tovar on the rim is included, and your guide keeps an eye on time, heat and conditions so the turnaround is always comfortable. Because it's a private day hike, there's no fixed group schedule and no strangers — just your party and your guide.

Difficulty

Grand Canyon Hiking Difficulty & Fitness Levels

Grand Canyon day hikes are rated moderate to strenuous — the trail descends first, so the climb back up to the rim is the harder half. That said, there is no fixed fitness requirement. Your guide sets the distance and turnaround around your group, from a gentle stretch just below the rim to a longer descent for stronger hikers. Because temperatures below the rim can climb well above those at the top, we hike at a steady pace, rest in the shade and drink regularly from the stocked cooler of water and Gatorade we bring along. If anyone wants to turn back early, that is completely fine — it's your private hike.

Come Prepared

What to Bring on Your Day Hike

We keep packing simple — hiking poles, day packs, safety gear and a cooler of water, Gatorade and snacks are all provided. To stay comfortable on the trail, we recommend you bring:

  • Sturdy closed-toe shoes or hiking shoes with good grip
  • Sun protection — hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Layers you can add or remove as temperatures change
  • A refillable water bottle (we keep it topped up)
  • Personal medications and a small camera or phone

Frequently asked questions

It's as easy or as challenging as you want it to be. The hike is rated moderate to strenuous because the climb back to the rim is the harder half, but there's no set fitness requirement — your Wilderness First Responder–certified guide sets the distance and turnaround around your group. It's a day hike; you're never committed to reaching the bottom.

The full experience runs about 9–10 hours door-to-door including drive time. Your actual time on the trail is flexible and set by your group's pace and how far you choose to descend — you rest, linger and turn around whenever you like.

Yes — 100% private. Your guide and vehicle are reserved for your group alone and never shared with strangers, so the pace, stops and trail choice are entirely yours.

Absolutely. Your guide tailors the trail, distance and turnaround point to your group's fitness and goals on the day — from an easy taste just below the rim to a more strenuous descent for experienced hikers.

Very little. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and bring sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) and layers for changing temperatures. We provide the hiking poles, day packs, safety gear and a cooler of water, Gatorade and snacks.

Yes — private, door-to-door hotel pickup is included at no extra charge from Sedona, Flagstaff, Williams and Tusayan, in a private air-conditioned SUV or van.
